An interesting, if uncomfortable, plot premise where an orphaned young woman is forced to choose a husband from her childhood "cousins." This is part of a group of books that contains my favorte Balogh--Dancing With Clara--one of the best historical romances out there. I read this years ago, after DWC and did not remember it. Now I know why. The rather tired hate you, hate you hate you plot contrivance between Julia and the staid Daniel just didn't work for me as it did for other reviewers. And it went on and on so that the revelation that they loved each other felt artificial, especially since Julia was still claiming to hate Daniel to everyone else. The result made her less likable, which was a shame. The tepid scenes and repetitive internal narrative made the book extremely slow until the last third. Now about review: my rating is for the writing, story, and characterization only, but I want to note the book is so poorly formatted with spaces like scene breaks between every single paragraph in the entire book, and half the "I" were the number 1 and truly unacceptably bad hyphens usage. There were paragraphs that cut dialogue in two and you could seldom tell where one scene ended and a new one began. Difficult to enjoy.Product details

You can tell that it is an early work of the author. I still enjoyed it. But I would like to mention that throughout the book 1 was used for the letter L .
I always expect the best from Mary Balogh..and she doesn't disapoint. This was a great read with some shocking language and content, however as much as I dislike foul language and gratuitous sex scenes Balogh seemed to slip those in without lowering the class of this story. My complements, Mary Balogh, you still reign high in my esteem
This is one of my favorite romance novels. I ordered the paperback but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did based on other reviews. It does involve a young woman being obliged to choose one of her grandfather's nephews for a husband in order to secure her future, according to his will. That is similar to Georgette Heyer's "Cotillion". But there the similarity ends. The hero and heroine reminded me very much of Mary Balogh's hero and heroine in her later book "Slightly Dangerous". He is somewhat repressed and stuffy, bearing a tremendous burden of responsibility from a young age. The heroine brings sunshine into the room wherever she goes. Opposites attract, even against their wills.
But I there is so much more in this story. I enjoyed the characters of Camilla and Malcolm. I loved the Mary Balogh's writing of the villain, not completely villainous, nor lost to all hope of redemption. He feels he has been forced into doing something reprehensible but he had the grace to feel guilty about it.
Mary Balogh brings the story to a very satisfying conclusion without resorting to over-the-top melodrama. I don't want to give away any spoilers. This book is a page turner. I could not put it down until I finished. I wouldn't want to rob another reader of the same pleasure of discovery. When this book is finally digitalized I will buy it for my to enjoy! I recommend this book!
I have mixed feelings about this one. I could not like the heroine, she seemed so forced to me, so the romance seemed forced. I could not feel that these two were in love at any point. Well, I did finish reading it so I will give it points for the writing, which was good as usual and the hero that I did like.
Also the plot was nonsensical. Seriously. If her "grandfather" wanted her to be married why would he do what he did Did he not love her? Did he not respect her? And were all the men in the family so in need of an estate that they just jumped to marry this girl? Nothing makes sense here.
I enjoyed reading this book, I liked Julia very much. She was a free spirit who enjoyed life very much and loved her adopted family. I could understand why she thought she hated Daniel when actually she loved him. I liked all the characters in this story especially the villain, Frederick. I look forward to the next book in this series about Frederick.
It was very annoying to have the number 1 used in place of the I (i) quite often.

I'm in agreement with reviewer CA. This title is one of three in a series written by Mary Balogh, which includes Dancing with Clara - in my view one of the best books (albeit the most uncomfortable and confronting) she has ever written. The first and second time I read Courting with Julia I remember reading it with enjoyment, even though it wasn't a favourite. Sadly, on re-reading it, I now find it to be somewhat stilted and predictable, with minimal passion and an unconvincing HEA. (I've just re-read this review and I've decided I've been unfair. Yes, I find the prose somewhat awkward and the resolution of the love affair comes too late for me - but the scene of them playing together in the pool is quite sweet. However, I can't see the H changing his nature and think Julia is correct in thinking he will want to control her.)
Irrespective, I am such a Balogh tragic that I am buying every one of her releases, even as I grumble - not only because of the varying quality of the titles, but also because I have already paid squillions to purchase many of them - for the first time, when they were originally published, then (because I threw them out) second-hand, in paper. (Why buy your non-favourites, you might ask? It somewhat beats me - but I just know I want them all on so I can get rid of my paper copies.)
I would probably give Courting with Julia a three and a half star rating nudged up to four, but I'm dropping it back down to three because of the formatting issues mentioned by CA. We have waited a long time for these re-releases and many of us will be buying this title for a second, or even third time. So there is absolutely no excuse for the formatting to be less than perfect. A message to Balogh's beta readers and editors please, please take more care with Dancing with Clara. One suggestion for readability, quite separate from the errors in formatting in Courting Julia please consider placing a line of stars or an extra spacing when changing scenes completely, within one chapter.
